The characters' intelligence and inventiveness means that they consider impossibilities to be challenges rather than obstacles and are creatively able to think their way out of any situation encountered. This is until they become embroiled in an international adventure, one they are not sure they will even survive. The only thing that can save them this time is the one thing in the world which is truly impossible. A Spell of Time is punctuated with comic encounters, and as the pace of the story increases up to a crescendo, it culminates in an ingenious ending; one which is very beautiful in its simplicity, yet seems astounding. One of the unique aspects of this story is in the amalgamation of science and magic, especially towards the end, where simple aspects of physics are seen to be far more amazing (almost magical) than anything that the best of our imaginations could conceive.
